1. Unlocking answers by asking questions
The Five Whys method delves into the truths of a situation to unlock responses that can transform challenges into creative opportunities.

2. Write down the problem
Describe it in simple terms. This will help you and your team focus on the task at hand.

3. Ask why the problem happens
Have each person in your session capture his/her why on a Post-it® Note.
4. Share
Share and group which why’s are similar and/or worthy of deeper consideration.
5. Examine your selections
Could there be another cause beneath it that is contributing to the problem?
If so, ask “why?” again and record your answer.
6. Continue these steps until the root problem is identified
We suggest doing the exercise at least five times but your situation may call for more or less.

Collaboration Technique : Attribute Change

1. Thinking from a new point of view
Attribute change is great for amplifying a small team into a larger one – when everyone takes on multiple points of view, you can generate lots of ideas with only a few people.

2. Create
Create a list of attributes like age, job or nationality.

3. Brainstorm
Brainstorm examples for each attribute until you have a range of different points of view.
4. Every angle
Think about the problem from every point of view. It can be helpful to do research in order to find out how attitudes and ideas differ amongst the groups you’re looking at, but if you don’t have time, your imagination goes a long way, too.
